We haven't learned much about AIDS in South Africa, but we are experiencing its effects everyday. Half of the billboards I see are about AIDS and safe sex, but I hear very little street conversation about it. I still have to think about the contradictions associated with health, and how it is rooted in the recent and complicated history here.
Allison and I decided that "experience" is not a strong enough word to describe our time here, so we have to add a click like in Xhosa. It's Xexperience now.
We are living in the township called Langa during Easter, the services are phenomenal.
Adam, Kate Sch. and I went to the "Picasso in Africa" exibit at the national gallery with our friend Sienda from Zwelathemba, our first township homestay. Here are some notes from a convo I had with Jack at an internet cafe:
me: So, my inspirational quotes from the museum went something like: "Art comes to you and prompts you to appreciate the moment of the highest quality only for the moment's sake" ps-it does smell like smokyness
jackbeck: oooh beautiful! i have one too Home is where the art is.5:32 PM (one of my favorites for a lot of different reasons- less articulate but i still love it)5:33 PM me: then picasso said something like, african art was used as a tool to rid oneself of spirits, which we now call emotions, which we materialize and tame through art..." aww, i think its everywhere, or everywhere is my home... jackbeck: i sort of thought of it more like art is something that can only be expressed from the soul5:34 PM and that the nature of the soul is to create art me: and the soul is most comfortable at home?"
