Maya wrote me an email with,
"something pretty from ee cummings:
here is the deepest secret nobody knows(here is the root of the root and the bud of the budand the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which growshigher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars aparti carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
i love you."
I replied,
"Maya, That was the most beautiful email I even read. I can't wait for you to recite me poetry lullaby's before we fall asleep under the endless and magnificent tree of life. Or giggle and talk about boys...
I asked my dad to get me a ticket home for June 15. I don't think I'll be staying on with you in England as much as I would love to, but I'll be ready to go back home for a while.
It's not even funny how much I can't wait to spend time with you because being around all these people who want to save the world is a little draining. They think very much inside of the box, and I like to sneak about around it. It's hard to have original thought when the conversation is about policy and distribution of medicine and statistics. One thing I strongly dislike is statistics. It's a social climbing poser who shows a different face based on what people want to see.
You know how South Africa has an enormous prevalence of AIDS? (based on statistics of course). Well, its complicated but people have access to drugs but because of denial and fear of ostracism, don't want to take them or even get tested. I'm inclined to think that in order to help people's health, it has to start from the person himself.
This trip instills upon me even more how much I would still like to read.
For our last home stay stretch, we are staying in Bo-Kaap, a colorful Muslim neighborhood on the edge of signal hill. We have three sisters, a 19 yr old who wants to be a lawyer but is taking a year off to make money to be able to afford college, a 15 year old, and 7 year old. The mom is a lovely large woman and both her and the father are so sweet . All of the women here in fact are wonderfully plump, you would love them. The asses here, are out of this world. I met a very pretty half-Malay/half-dutch boy who surfs. It's not my priority, I'm more focused on just taking in the rest of this xexperience.
Love you,
Sasha"
